Dr. Ron Fisher, founder and director, describes The Center for Professional & Personal Growth, Inc.: I founded this counseling center in 1980 to provide a unique type of counseling, different in concept and technique.
Unlike many therapists, I do not regard most emotional difficulties as primarily “mental illnesses or disorders.” Instead, it has been my experience that many personal or career problems originate in skill deficits, inaccurate beliefs, and irrational fears. Each of us does the best we can every day; ineffective and incompetent behavior is not intentional. I believe that failure is not evidence of mental illness or character defect—no one desires his or her life to be miserable. Therefore, if problems are seen as deficiencies in skills, beliefs, and emotional strength, then the role of the counselor is more that of a teacher and coach than a doctor treating illness.
Following these beliefs, we offer both career counseling and personal therapy, so that you can work with one counselor, rather than artificially separating these two major areas of your life. My 28 years experience has demonstrated the effectiveness of targeting the "whole person.” It is not unusual for a person to have related difficulties in both arenas.
At the Center for Growth, a licensed counselor works with you to help change your work or personal life, or both. All counseling at this Center is focused and goal-oriented. Understanding and empathy are essential qualities for a counselor, but they are tools, not goals. If a counselor and a client are moving toward a visible goal, then both are accountable. You and your counselor set concrete, attainable goals, giving you a clear way to measure your progress. If you have difficulty in making changes or overcoming problems, the assistance of a counselor can provide the critical difference.
